Applying Vygotsky’s (1978) idea of the zone of proximal development (ZPD)3 to the design of place-based instruction holds great promise as an area of research, particularly for critical place-based inquiry. We know that students come to the classroom from so many different places and with so many different life experiences. The challenge is designing curriculum to serve all students, regardless of their starting points or their particular mix of experiences.

Key Design Decisions

The most effective assignments guide students toward the learning goals by highlighting the key concepts of the project and reinforcing those concepts at multiple points of the inquiry process. For example, course readings or class discussions can be used to frame classroom discussions; when students leave the classroom, they can later use the ideas in those readings to focus their observations and data collection.
